I'd gladly attend a Hanukkah service if a Jew invited me as an observer. Judas Maccabees is a hero to both Catholics and Jews, after all. Of course, if your avatar is to be taken at face value, he would have wanted to have nothing to do with you.
Of course I don't believe folks of different religions should actually participate in each other's worship--it is dishonest, and expresses a unity of faith that does not yet exist. You could explain that to them.

You could thank them for including you, but tell them that you are not Christian and would not be comfortable attending the service and would they mind if you chose to meet them afterwards.
However I have attended Midnight Mass on Christmas and enjoyed it thoroughly and I too am Jewish. I do not kneel or make the sign of the cross, but enjoy the songs and being with my friends. Also I was always made to feel welcome, never felt threatened, and no one tried to convert me. For me Christmas is just a time when people try to be a bit nicer to each other while singing songs mostly written by Jews.

Just say I appreciate the offer. But I'm Jewish and we celebrate Chanukah not Christmas. Being that straightforward should do the trick. Its honest and kind.

Why not attend? I am Jewish and go to all types of events...the essence of religion/ philosophy is to explore ALL belief systems

I'm not Jewish, but I am Wiccan. I simply say to people "Thank you, but I am not a Christian."
If they press, I tell them that I am a Wiccan High Priest and quite happy with my own religion.

I think you've already come up with the best way of addressing the issue. You don't need to give a lot of detail about your objection.

We're Christians - most of us celebrate the holiday like the pagans!
