Ya we have coyotes too...
If you get a bigger dog the coyotes will lure the dog away from the property then a lot of them will attack and kill it. We feel this happened to one of our aussies. We have a English Mastiff and we do not even let him out by himself!
We have a six foot security fence around the property (well not all of the property just where we let the dogs and cats in). The dogs do not go out, specially at night, without us beyond this fence. The only ones that are out beyond this fence are the horses. We also have cool neighbors who do not hesitate to shoot the coyotes.
One thing to remember is, the wild animals were here before us. Even though our small town has been around for what we think is a long time. When humans are gone the wild animals will still be here.
One of our dogs was attacked by them, and still has problems. People who do not take care of there cats, are surprised when there cats no longer come home. A niebor came out to find his goat which was his best friend was tore open, dead. Who knows by what?
We choose to live in such a place......It might be against the laws of where you are to trap wild critters? Check with your wildlife and game department. Keep your pets close to the house...

We have the same problem and I only have a 4ft high fence, my dogs would make a tasty snack. I never let them out alone regardless of the time of day or night, it's a fricking nuisance but beats having one of my dogs carried off. It was so bad last year our village hired a trapper. But you have an American Eskimo dog which should be able to hold its own against a scrawny coyote, the ones I'm seeing are really ratty and skinny and aren't hunting in packs. Are you sure it was a coyote?

Don't let your dog out alone for long periods of time. Check on him, and if its an outside dog, get a doggy door so he can come in the house in times of emergency. Also, fence in a relatively small peice of your backyard so your dog can stay in, and the coyotes out. A bigger dog to scare them away won't work. Coyotes always win.

We've been living with coyotes in my area for a long time. My advice to you is to fence your yard and keep a close watch on your dog. Lighting your back yard with motion lights will work as well. The fence works best-coyotes don't jump it-they are too lazy.

Your dog should not be left alone outside, regardless of whether there is a coyote or not.
That being said, trapping coyotes is illegal in many states due to their endangered levels. Also, depending on the type of trap, it can cause severe pain to the coyote which is very unnecessary.
Don't allow the dog outside alone, keep an eye on him when he is outside, and a fence is a great way to protect your dog from many outside threats, including other dogs.

Well most will probably tell you to keep him indoors. How do you know it was coyotes? If you didn't see it happen it could be anything, he could even be messing with neighbors dogs or getting hit by a car. If he were my dog I would supervise him while outdoors, or fence a part of the property where I could safely let him out.

Coyotes will attack your pets no matter what you do. They are hungry and need to eat.
Call the police and inquire about what they will allow you to do. If your property is large enough they may allow you to shoot the coyotes with a 22 long.

Buy a large dog if you can not put up a fence. I would get a pit bull. A friend of mine had the same problem only they killed one of her dogs. Her mother in law gave her a pit bull named rex and he got rid of the coyotes.

Killing coyotes and other nuisance predators is usually legal in rural areas. If you don't want to do that, you might try getting a large Great Pyrenees or Wolfhound to patrol the property. They will kill the coyotes that come into the yard.

No dog will be able to defend himself against a coyote unless hes trained to fight.. So why not try building a fence?
