Bare with me, I may not make a whole lot of sense.
This theory would only be true for the people that work night shift but try to live like they work day shift. For example, they revert back to sleeping at night on their days off. The melatonin production is based on your body's clock, not just light, as in day or night.
So say you always woke up at 3 in the afternoon. You had to be at work at 5. You still got up at 3 or relativly close to it on days you dont work. You get home from work at 1 am. You go do your shopping or whatever else you do. You fix your supper at say 3 or 4 in the morning. You go to bed say around 7-10 in the morning.
This is the typical 8-4 schedule shifted up a few hours. I guess you couldnt do it with kids. While there are stores open that late at night, and if not then that early in the morning, it would never really fit a school schedule.
Anyways, would this person have the same issue. And then, say they completly darken their room while they are asleep. Would that effect these statistics?
If this was true, then everyone who lived in Alaska, I guess the whole north and south poles would have this problem as well. Did they do any geological research I wonder?
While there may be a link, I dont know if it is strong enough to say this would actually cause cancer, or other diseases. Therefore I dont think they should get hazard pay.
Although many people do get a differential. However it is for the inconvience, not because of a hazard

No. They should take melatonin supplements if a person is worried about it. This night shift possibly causing a person to not produce enough melatonin which may possibly result in cancerous tumor growths is just another possible cause of cancer that may or may not happen in some people.

It would be wiser to give them vitamin D and melatonin - the chemicals that are diminished in their bodies as a result of lack of sunlight (sleeping during the day) and lack of darkness (working at night), respectively. Inadequate levels of both chemicals are common and are associated with increased cancer risks.
Prevention is a lot more 'valuable' than a few extra bucks.
