Why do we have to give a job at least two weeks notice before we quit? But they don't have to give us two weeks notice before they fire us, so we can look for another job. That's so bass ackwards. Sooooo unfair. Ever wondered that?

You give a two week notice because you don't want to burn your bridges - you want to leave on good terms, and have contacts and references that will help you throughout your career.

However, when a company terminates an employee, they have already decided that they no longer require your services, so there is no reason to let the employee stay and collect a paycheck after that point. In fact, there there is a lot of damage that a disgruntled person can cause in two weeks if they stay, so to reduce liability, it is more prudent for the company to enforce the termination immediately. A lot depends on the reason for termination, also. An employee who is laid off is often given consideration, and sometimes assistance in securing a different position, but the same consideration is not offered to an individual fired for cause.

i dont think that you have a legal obligation to give 2 weeks notice. I think that employment is "AT WILL" in most states and that means either party has the right to terminate with or without notice.

It's customary , not a legal requirement to give a two week notice.

In my company, sometimes a 2 week notice is given , sometimes a 60 day notice is given and at other times we just give same day notice.
