One theory is that census records that include race, religion or ethnicity are a tool for intollerant policy and devisive. Another school of thought opines that such information must be collected in order to head off intollerance through policies like affirmative action.

France has largely followed the first course. They do not collect data on the races or religions of immigrants. They've recently had race riots lasting months in which hundreds of cars were torched - each night.

America has largely followed the second course. For over 40 years now. Have you noticed any lack of racial tensions in America?

Where have you been? Check the arrival records at Ellis Island where tens of millions of immigrants arrived between 1892 and 1954. The religious faith of each and every one of them was "counted."

If we count Jews , wee need to count Catholics and Islamists.
