Getting your lip pierced hurts, but it is not bad enough to worry over. I found it to hurt less than my ear piercings (my ears HATE being pierced)
Lip piercing is nothing to be scared about. All you need to do is relax and think about how fabulous your new piercing will look and how little getting it done will hurt. It sounds silly. It isnt. The best way to get any piercing to hurt less is to believe it is not going to be so bad.
Instead of being scared of a few seconds of pain, spend your energy on being excited about getting it. You'll be able to wear it everywhere with you. It'll be there when you wake up in the morning. It will be your new fabulous accessory/expression. And all you have to do to get this wonderful thing is to sit through ten seconds of a sharp pinch. No big deal.
Numbing your lip can change the circulation if you use ice which can change its shape and texture for the piercing process. Making your lip tougher and harder to pierce really isnt your goal in this situation. Creams and ointments are not going to completely numb your lip and can potentially irritate the piercing if they get in it. Most importantly, your piercing is not going to hurt badly enough to need it!!
If you cant get so excited and thrilled about your lip piercing that you wouldn't take 10 seconds of pain to get it, you don't want one that badly. Once you are that worked up to get it, its time to find a reputable shop!

Numbing it beforehand could cause it to bleed more, or it could cause the placement to be off (like it could be crooked) no matter how good the piercer.
I'd say use ibuprophen but that thins your blood, and could cause you to bleed more.
So there really isn't anything ya can do.. If you can't handle the pain then simply don't get it done.
Did you get your ears done with a gun or a needle? If done with a gun, that's probably why that hurt so bad -- the gun is a blunt object being shoved in your ear which hurts a LOT worse then a sharp object.

Well, you can take some oragel with you and ask the piercer if you can put some on. I mean anytime a needle is going into your skin, it is going to hurt. It is just a matter of how much you are wanting to get it done.

when you get a peircing professionally done its so quick its over before you even notice it. you will be fine. yes it hurts but only for a split second, i got my tongue, lebret, nips and ears and its the same for everything, don't think about it when they are doing it, close your eyes or turn away. the anticipation is the worse part. NEVER TRY AND DO IT YOURSELF. I have seen disaster from that

Just don't do it. Employers are not hiring people with freaky piercings any more.
