VolunteerMatch (http://www.volunteermatch.org), Idealist (http://www.idealist.org) and CraigsList (http://www.craigslist.com) all list volunteering opportunities with thousands of organizations, including Illinois. This is a great place to look for volunteering opportunities.

Volunteering during the holidays can be difficult, because organizations are overwhelmed with requests from people wanting to do such at this time of year. So be persistent, and don't delay in starting to make your inquiries.

There are a lot of homeless shelters in Chicago that provide meals to the homeless. One I've worked at was Cornerstone Community Outreach http://www.ccolife.org/ . I'm sure there are also homeless shelters in Springfield and Champaign Urbana, as well as some of IL's other big towns, if Chicago is too far for you to go. Use the yellow pages to look them up.

At charities, I've served food, sorted clothing, tutored kids, painted walls and murals, gardened, helped out with community events... the possibilities are pretty endless, and they're usually pretty good experiences if you get involved.

Happy Holidays to you, too!
