I'm 21 years old and I was recently diagnosed with insulin resistance and fatty liver disease (runs in my family along with diabetes). I am about to start on Metformin to get both of these under control as well as to help me lose weight I am unable to lose due to these problems.

I would like to hear from anyone who is on Metformin or knows someone on it! How does it work for you/them? Pros and Cons? Thanks so much!

It didn't work very well for me, and it caused some digestive problems. I found other drugs much more effective. Metaformin forces digestion lower into the intestine, and that can cause less sugar to be absorbed but can also cause gas. I personally believe it is only for borderline cases where a small improvement can make a difference, not for serious diabetics.

I had a terrible experience with Metformin - it made me throw up and feel nauseous almost constantly, even before I worked up to the full dosage, so I had to stop (approx 3 months, up to 3/4 dose) - BUT I have heard some people say it worked miracles for them.

My advice is to take it very, very slowly and work your way up. If the side effects outweigh the gains then speak with your doc. Good luck!

I was on Metformin for about a year before I got pregnant. I was on it for PCOS - I don't have diabetes. It worked very well for me. My cycles became regular for the first time in my life and without changing my eating habits (which were already very healthy) I shed a ton of weight, about 50 lbs. With PCOS you can eat healty and exercise everyday and you still gain weight.

I haven't had any complications.
