I am looking to get a 7mm Magnum High Powered Rifle for Christmas. I would like to get into hunting, especially because Virginia has a lot to offer outdoor enthusiasts. My question, is what age do I have to be in order to buy a rifle, if I have a hunting permit does that age change? Could my father buy it and have it licensed under his name but legally let me use it under his direction? Thanks

As a Dealer,Federal Law requires that you be 18 years of age to purchase Rifles or Shotguns and 21 years old for Handguns. This Federal law is the same in all states here in the U.S.

However, there is nothing legally to prevent your Father from purchasing the rifle under his name and and submitting the required 4473 paperwork, than allowing you to use it until you turn 18. At that point for a small fee, ANY FFL Dealer in your area can do a legal "transfer", putting the rifle in your name only. Most Dealers will do the simple transfer for about $20. This is perfectly legal.Good Luck

Federal law requires you to be 18 to purchase long guns. There's no license required, though. If you want to try that, just have him purchase it, and hand it over to you. If he's nervous about it, you can transfer it via an FFL dealer when you turn 18 just to be on the overly-safe side.

YES, but a better choice of caliber, would be the 30-06.* Forget about the 7mm Mag.* It is to expensive to shoot & that caliber is really not practical or necessary for all North American Game that you want to Hunt.* Its way to much gun for you or anyone to hunt with.*
