This website explains NC speeding ticket laws pretty well. Be sure to check on the out of state page if that applies to you. NC DA's will work with you if you are not a habitual offender, but I think representation is a good way to go. 9 miles over is NOT usually a big deal.

You can probably find a lawyer to handle this for you for $150 or less plus the court costs and fines. The court costs and fines will run you close to another $150. So you are looking at $300 total. Have your parents loan you some money if they are really interested in keeping your insurance rates where they are at now. NOW, if you can't afford a lawyer, here is what you should do. 1. Go to court 2. Speak to the District Attorney politely when your case is called 3. Explain to them that it is your first ticket (they should have a copy of your driving record to verify this) 4. Ask first for an Improper Equipment 5. If they won't agree to that, then ask for a Prayer for Judgment Continued (PJC) 6. If they still won't agree, then see if you can get it reduced to 64/55 (9 over). Numbers 4, 5 and 6 will result in NO INCREASE in your insurance. But you are still going to have to pay the court costs and fines unless you get a PJC. There are no fines associated with the PJC, only court costs. Best of Luck

Simply by shwoing up to court, where, nine times out of ten, the cop who wrote the ticket won't show, because it's more lucrative to his jurisdicion's coffers for him to be back out on the streets writing tickets to ignorant folk who believe that just because he writes them a ticket, he'll have to pay.
If you really were speeding and if he it on tape that you were passing cars that were showing on his radar as driving much closer to the speed limit, you won't beat the ticket if the cop does show up, no matter who you might have representing you.
Your best bet, simply, is to show up to court and hope the cop does not.
If you do decide to go with an attorney, make sure the attorney knows that if your accuser fails to show then he hasn't acutally done any work for you and won't charge you a fee, and that if your accuser does show, that unless he can get you completely off, he has failed to do his job by you, and won't charge you a fee.
The reason you're getting so bombarded is that there are an eager pool of vulturous attorneys who are every bit as hopeful that you're ignorant of what it is that they will be charging you for, as most people are about paying tickets just because they got them.

You can challenge any ticket such as yours, but to do it right and get this matter off your driving record you need to get any attorney to represent you. A few years ago I got a speeding ticket and I didn't pay it for about 2 years, then I decided to deal with it because I heard of people having tickets they did not pay getting put in jail. My attorney kept it out of court for an additional year and my fine was $125 - less than it would have been had I dealt with it myself. Also, this was never recorded as a moving violation on my DMV record. It was worth getting an attorney - he charged me $90 for his work.

pay it... I am from pa and I got pulled over in Burgaw NC for NOT WERAING my seatbelt! When The officer pulled me over, I was NOT speeding or doing anything wrong, just for the belt. He then Harressed me because I had a supended DL in the past I sat for 55 minutes, untill he finaly let me go after he asked everything but what size my underwear were. Only to fail to realize (and I didnt untill after the fact) my plates were expired, and I had no insurance. You do NOT have to sign your ticket in NC. I didnt have to sign mine eather. It is signed when you plead not guilty or guilty. NC laws are GAY
