By older cat (1 year +) absolutely hates my little cat (4 months). My little cat has already been in the house for 2 months. The older cat has been here for all of her life. The older cat hisses everytime the younger cat comes near her... Is there any way to stop her? Or do I just have to keep them away from each other?

Thanks for your help!

This happens all the time with cats and kittens. And sometimes it really takes a long time for them all to get used to each other. Once your 4-month old gets alittle bigger, he/she will probably be alittle more assertive and then your older cat will probably start to accept the younger one more (believe it or not). I had the same situation and after about six months, the younger cat was sucking on the older cat's fur (like a kitten suckling! - At first I couldn't figure out why the older cat had these "points" in his fur all the time....) and they were cuddling like they were friends forever. be patient.

When we got our second cat we had wanted to get one closer to her age. Even though it ended up only being a couple months difference. The older cat hissed at the younger one for about 2 -3 weeks. After that when they would play she'd be a little rough on him, make him squeal and now they're good buddies.

It takes time. Especially when your older cat has been the only one around for a while. Let her know she's still number one. Feed her first that sort of thing, but be stern about the hissing. Give her a quick swat on the bottom or a tap on the nose when she does it and a firm "no".

For future reference, the closer in age they are the better. And cats do better when adopted in pairs.

You don't say if the younger cat is also a female. In my experience, two females take longer to adapt to each other than, either one of each or two males. Females are a whole lot more territorial than males, especially if the older one is the female. I've seen older males "adopt" younger males/females, but the older females just aren't as accepting. If you had bathed the younger one the FIRST DAY you had it, and then rubbed something of the older one's on it BEFORE introducing them to each other, you'd have had a better chance of the older one accepting the baby, at once......cause it would have smelled just like HER! However, it's too late for that w/this one, so just remember for any future "additions" to the family. Good luck.......

Cats are very teritorial. If you want two cats, it is often advised that you choose two kittens from the same litter.

I have a VERY similiar circumstance. My older cat was about 2 when I introduced the 12 week old "new brother". I so wanted to them to get along.
She hissed at him all the time and swatted at him. Then he started to get bigger and bigger. He then became larger then her, but she continued---but, he fought back.

Today the older cat is 11 and the younger one is 9. They aren't "great" friends, but I do think that like having eachother around. They will vie for your attention and may get jealous of oneanother.

we had that problem and we just left them alone every now and then our older cat hissees at her but for the most part they stay away from each other. If the older cat acts like he/she is fighting with the younger one, don't worry just keep an eye on them the older one is teaching the younger one to stay away.

I don't know.. i had the opposite problem, my little kitten absolutely terrorised my 2 'big' cats.. he was a complete bully, especially with my big hefty tom.. it was quite funny to see a tiny scrap of a thing picking on a cat 10times bigger than him, if my boy had decided 'enough' he could of just sat on him and ended all his problems... as it all turned out (a long story!!) my 2 rescue cats have left home and live in a 'hotel' across the road..(my neighbour took them in thinking they were strays months back!!)
and my 'tom cat' comes over to see us most days... and winds the now 'big' kitten up.. by parading around the garden and sitting on sill looking into the window.. 'big kitten' cos crazy.. he is not allowed out!! .. mainly to protect ALL the animals in the neighbourhood... and God knows what 'presents' he would bring home for me... (maybe a few dead dogs??loads of dead cats??) xx

Do not separate them! Your big cat needs to learn to share the house. They WILL eventually get along! trust me I had the same problem! Its not like big cat will kill little cat! Make sure to give big cat extra love and kisses for being a good sport.
