Go to your local animal shelter. You will be able to complete you community service hours and have a lot of fun. You might even decide to come back on your own time to volunteer.I have done if for 2 years and its the best thing I have ever done.I made me decide to be a Vet Tech. It's more than walking dogs. It learning about breeds, helping with adoptions, and being able to identify that an animal may be sick.

I used to go on a website that was all volunteer, and you could put in your area. I really wish I could remember it, but maybe if you did a search (volunteer work or volunteer + your state or town), you'd find it. Try craigslist. They have a section for volunteering. Pretty much any organization that is non-profit will have volunteer oportunities.

Hospitals, soup kitchens, homeless shelters, animal shelters, libraries, elder care homes, food pantries, political campaigns, environmental groups - sometimes for clean up trips also... I would think to work with kids you'd have to go through some sort of background check these days so you might want to have some basic personal info handy.

Those are great ideas. Check with local schools or Head Start to see what you can do to help if you want to work with kids. The hospitals always need volunteers, so do nursing or retirement homes. Find something that you would enjoy doing and they will love having you.

All great ideas here, I would add, how about Homeless shelters? There are many kids at such places that could use your skills.

Mostly Seniors volunteer at hospitals, I am SURE it would be pretty neat to have a young person in their ranks!!!

Good Luck!

VolunteerMatch (http://www.volunteermatch.org), Idealist (http://www.idealist.org) and CraigsList (http://www.craigslist.com) all list volunteering opportunities with thousands of organizations. These are great places to look for volunteering opportunities.

Decide what you are interested in, how often you could volunteer, what time of day you can volunteer, etc., and then start applying for appropriate opportunities. Remember that finding a volunteering opportunity is a lot like finding a job -- you have to present yourself very well, and you have to contact many organizations before you are ultimately chosen.
