Why does it prevail in society? I know of no religion that supports rape or murder, but those keep happening too. People are imperfect and tend to not follow the rules.
Wicca and some other NeoPagan religions have nothing against cohabitation outside of marriage. I would be surprised if Unitarians object to it.

live-in and break-as-you-like kind of cultures don't suit to any culture barring Indian. One has to have standards while doing anything. Just ad-hoc kind of behavior based on emotion or that moment of time will lead to extinction.
Take the example of Information Technology. Why there are so many frameworks like ITIL, ISO, BS etc., etc., in place?. If we don't do things in a systematic way, then after sometime we will not be able to control them.
Indian culture did promote this kind of relationships. Look at the women like Draupadi, Kunthi etc.,. They all had abnormal relationships.
As someone said, people started to put plugs on these as the societies were becoming more and more hap hazards and uncontrolled. Some of the controls were natural like marriages and some of them were by selfish creeds like child marriages, dowry etc.,

Hinduism believes in Gandharva-Vivah,i.e marriage thru physical union, without the knowledge or consent of others. The Live-in system is a modified version of tht Gandharva-Vivah. Neither Gandharva-vivah nor the Live-in system was or is accepted by the Hindu culture even today.
Am not very sure about other cultures or religion. As to why it prevails in society,it may be bcoz, many among today's youth shy away from the commitment and responsibilties of marriage, but need a partner nonetheless.Hence the live-in option suits them.

According to the ancient mythology of India people did fall in love had love marriages and there were also relationships which seem like current live-in-relationships. This is common for any society and for a culture that has existed for few thousand years its difficult to imagine they didnt have it.
There were also seeming incidents like extra-marital affairs ,live in relations etc.Actually it seems that society was pretty tolerant of all such things , but the emphasis and respect was given to married couples.
The current Indian society which has evolved in past 6-700 years is far too rigid and in some cases totally mis-directed.
In ancient India girls/boys had full freedom to choose their partners this process was called as "Swayamvara" meaning choosing your own "var" mostly for girls, and even if the parents did not like it they were never outcasted by the society as such.

My native Abanaki people allowed the boy to live with them for 6 moons, in their long house, the young couple had to sleep ,head to toe, no sex! If the young man was found compatible after 6 moons they could join in what you call marriage. I doubt if any religion would condone live in just for sex, few young people follow the path of their elders.

live-in-relationships are more prevalent in the west..and accepted by all..Indian culture still does not have this flexibility....but is becoming more popular amongst the university students and the "high-fliers"....although they keep quiet about this relationship from the relatives.....and religion has very little to do with this phenomenon....that's what i observe...

Marriage between two people does not have to be formalized with some ridiculous ritual, to make the union acceptable to some social or religious standard. Two people who have chosen to walk together in life need no approval beyond their own acceptance of one another.
