As a rape survivor (I haven't been on the board for a bit so I don't know what's been happening), I hope that most people would have the common decency not to joke. Try leading a normal, good productive life afterwards people. I have done it but it has been a tough hall. Please, no joking about this.
Yes. I'd like someone to tell me a good ol' fashioned rape joke or be sarcastic about it. I have never once dealt with my rape using sarcasm or humor because it's just not funny nor worth a laugh. I think there are better ways to protest sexual assault than jokes and sarcasm. Ask Amnesty International or Human Rights Watch what they're doing out there for this woman that everyone was talking about. If you read their publications, you'll find that this happens all the time and not just in Islamic countries.

Anyone that makes a joke about sexual assault is just as guilty in mind as those sick and twisted people who commit the act itself. Those that joke about it may even be worse because by laughing about it they are promogating the idea that rape and sexual assault are ok, which then could cause some people to think it's okay and then go rape someone.

I think you are taking it the wrong way. I'm sure you heard that there is a rape victim in Saudi Arabia that is being punished because she was with a man when a group of men gang raped her. Non-Muslims are outraged about this and Muslims say she broke islamic law. Many people are just trying to show how disgusting islamic law is. It's better to laugh about it, to show how ridiculous Shariah Law is, than to wallow in misery and contempt. In the end, most of these questions (I believe and hope) are trying to help rape victims.
EDIT: chem sickle - Thanks. That's exactly what I was trying to say, only you did a much better job. Great answer.
God Bless.

I haven't noticed this, so I'm not defending it. However, I think that there can be humor inside tragedy. I think that humor is one of our main coping mechanisms. We may not even be able to tell the difference between someone who is just lashing out or being mean, and someone who is, not even consciously, trying to get a grip on something he is very uncomfortable about. A million cases in point from fart jokes to Charley Chaplin's Hitler. Humor is the savior of the world. It's how we spread ideas about the President and make friends on the other side of the world.

I just answered a question that was being sarcastic about rape victims in Islam being punished, but I think a little dry sarcasm isn't joking about the matter, rather giving a flippant answer isn't being funny, but pointing out what should be the obvious...

I don't see anything funny about sexual assault. We have an awful lot of sexual assault and abuse in our society. This is not a positive statement, of how well we as a nation is doing, in the area of sexual morality. We have way too much of all forms of abuse, and should be working at changing our society, in the direction of lowering the amount of abuse, and ending the cycle of abuse. Attitudes need to change, morality needs to be improved. It is not a joking matter.

Moon is right. It is not just this topic that people are making jokes about.
Too many find it easy to joke about things that are painful to others. Maybe it's because they haven't been through the hurt or maybe it's as simple as they have no compassion for others. Either way, it is wrong.

I think you're confusing slams on Islam with jokes about rape.
...but accept this star as an apology nonetheless

Anything that is too hideous to sincerely deal with in our society is dealt with by trying to distance ourselves by telling jokes about it. Trying to laugh to tears away in some cases. Unfortunately, this only works for people who have never had to personally deal with the problem in their life. But, even if it is in bad taste, I do rejoice in people's freedom to find comfort, even if it is through vulgar methods. That is what separates us from Muslim countries and their teddy bears....

It hasn't, as far as I know. Although I'm loathe to call any topic out of bounds for humor, I just can't really imagine any jokes about it. Where did you see this?
