Religion figured heavily in symbolism in two old movies I bet will be forgotten but are still considered controversial
Birth of a Nation
Triumph of of the Will
propagada ..both of them. Triumph was used to recruit Nazi party members and Birth of a Nation was used to recruit Klu Klux Klan members
I'd have to disagree strongly with Goddess..The Last Temptation of Christ got MUCH more attention and condemnation than the Passion.
With the Passion, there was more publicity about people condemning those who challenged the sources for Mel Gibson's screenplay than there were people protesting about the film itself!
Don't forget all the hubub that happend prior to the release of Agnes of God. Catholics were in an uproar.
Meg Tilly played a young nun who secretly gives birth to a baby and then the baby's dead body is later found strangled to death. She claimed to have gotten pregnant the same way Mary did..however..the plot thickened. And so did the controversy after the movie was released.

The Last Temptation has it over the Passion and Life of Brian. There were huge protests in the street when Last Temptation came out. Most of the controversy over the Passion was people writing articles about the violence. Golden Compass hasn't provoked any demos as far as I know. Hardly anyone outside the USA is aware of Left Behind.

I'd say The Last Temptation of Christ, even over the Passion. The Passion simply told the story as most Christians learned it; The Last Temptation asked a lot of questions that made viewers squirm.

Just about any religious movie is contraversial to somebody.

There were a few...
The Passion of the Christ
The Last Temptation of Christ
Jesus Christ Superstar
Of the three, the one that got the most attention was The Passion of the Christ, because of the way it depicted the Jews. Personally, I think that Jesus Christ Superstar is much more controversial.
