My daughter occasionally gets migraines that are very severe (usually on the weekend or after regular hours of course!), so when we go to the ER, they generally give her a shot of Demeral, along with Phenergan to control vomitting. They told us that the single dose of Demerol "breaks the cycle" of pain by blocking pain receptors, but because she isn't taking it continuously, it doesn't give her rebound headaches. By injecting it, the medication also gives her very fast relief.

Hope this helps, and I hope you get relief soon!!

By the way, are you taking a daily med to keep your migraines under control? We take Topamax, and it seems to work very well, but it does take time to find the correct dosage, and for it to get into your system. Just a thought!

A demerol injection is used to "break the cycle" of migraines. It does this by literally, knocking you out, allowing your brain to gain relief from the pain. I have suffered from migraines for years. When they get so bad, that I can no longer stand it, I go in to the ER for an injection of demerol. I usually sleep for 12 to 18 hours and 9 out of 10 times, it stops the migraine.

Sure Demerol will take the pain away but the ER may or may not give you that. Go to the ER and tell them about your headache and they can treat you. There are many other meds they can use for migraines as well

It will take the pain away, and even if the pain didn't go away instantly, it will knock you out so you will sleep it off. I hate demerol shots, I would suggest trying Toradol shot first. If you go to urgent care or the e.r., you can ask for Toradol and they will happily give it to you as it is non-narcotic. However, they won't give you Demerol if you drive yourself (of course).

Good Luck, I know how rotten migranes can be. I suggest NOT trying narcotic painkillers, they are so addictive and cause rebound headaches. You will be sooooo much happier if you can find something non narcotic to help the pain.
