There are soup kitches and helping hands ministries or something similar in most towns, check your yellow pages. Or if your employer lets you, you could go to a nursing home for the day. The staff will tell you how to help-like with games, movies, at meal time, reading to the residents, etc. and the folks there love the company.

VolunteerMatch (http://www.volunteermatch.org), Idealist (http://www.idealist.org) and CraigsList (http://www.craigslist.com) all list volunteering opportunities with thousands of organizations. These are great places to look for volunteering opportunities.

Don't wait until the last minute -- arrange as far in advance as possible to volunteer on your community service day.

If you want to have fun and get paid go check out your local animal shelter.I have been there for 2 years as an unpaid volunteer and I love it.
