Will I save a substantial amount of money by waiting until after Chrismas to buy my new TV? I am looking for a 37" LCD.

Last year the prices of HDTVs (particularly LCDs) dropped substantially. This was announced in the media before the beginning of 2007, and the reasoning was that it was getting more cost-effective to manufacture LCD screens and the market was saturated with HDTVs. For example, the same model I bought for $1800 a little over a year ago is on sale at Best Buy for $1350.

Generally speaking, the price of electronics goes down over time for a given technology (computers, HDTVs, etc.), unless the manufacturers come out with some new kind of whiz-bang features that allows them to keep the price up. And, it's kind of hit or miss as to what will be on sale and when. That is, it's difficult to say if a particular TV will be cheaper during the pre-holiday sales or post-holiday sales.

I would recommend that you look at the prices now and have a target in mind. If something comes along at a price that meets your target, go for it. If not, you can wait. But, you may have to wait until something like a President's Day (in February) sale or something like that until the price comes back down on the item you want.

No, most electrical 'sales' are commonly described as 'Mickey Mouse' sales, meaning the reductions are not genuine.
As an example, I recently bought a Toshiba 37" which was on sale for £849 at Curry's. A visit to their website found the same model for £649. I reserved it online and went to the very same store to collect it 30min later.
A sales assistant told me that the model instore could well be reduced to around £700 in a forthcoming sale and would be snapped up by unsuspecting punters.
Another example is, I bought a very nice Hitachi HI-FI for my daughter, I paid £150 for it and was surprised to see the same model, in the same store, on 'sale' two weeks later for £180. Their sale pitch was it was on sale for £250 at just one branch for two weeks so you were 'saving' £70.
The moral of the story is, No sale is genuine, the bargains are there to be had all year round.
