I don't think it is fleas. They do agitate a dog and make them itch and chew but bloody scabs on only the tail area? I don't think so. Hot spots sounds more likely but I haven't read of them bleeding.
There are other parasite that could cause this but like the other people have so nicely stated.... A trip to the vet or even a phone call to them would be advised.
It could even be an allergy to what your pupps eating.
Or even an anxiety. Dogs with separation anxiety tend to lick and excessively chew their paws and other parts of their bodies that they can reach.
Get it checked out ^_^ your dog will thank you for it.
Hope this helps,

If you're not treating the dog regularly for fleas, then the likelihood that is what it is. Allergies to fleas can cause some pretty severe reactions.
For goodness sake take the dog to a vet, this sounds really awful for him. You can't get answers for this kind of thing on the internet - there are no vets here, and anyway, how can anyone diagnose without even seeing the dog? There are many different possible causes for this problem - fleas is the most usual, but it could also be mange, allergies, skin infection, hormonal trouble or even behavioural. Take the poor guy to a vet!

Hi,
Okay this COULD be Glandular Cysts. A dog will get these if its lacking in a hormone and so will need a blood test to find out which hormone its lacking before it can be treated.
Also scabs are a good indication your dog is being bitten by ticks, or other outdoor insects.
A vet will be able to tell you wahts wrong and give him treatment.
If you want to try anything yourself first, try giving him a garlic tablet once a day for about two weeks and see if this helps him. Also try changing his diet to dog foods high in Omgea-3 as this helps keep their skin and fur healthy. Also try bathing it atleast twice a day with a little warm water (with a little salt added) and a cotton wool bud. Pat it gently dry and then apply a little Germolin ointment to the affected area. It SHOULD clear it up, plus ive used this method for my dogs AND cats before, just keep his head away from his tail for abit to allow the ointment to soak in and it should work.
IF it doesnt then please take him to a vet.

if he does have fleas u have to get rid of them on the dog and in ur house.he might have an allergy to food or it could be air borne.my border collie gets scabs and bites at her upper tail and back and she is flea free. muzzle ur dog and try to sofen up the sores with warm soapy water and wash the area where he is raw well rinse it then apply some medicated oatmeal dog conditioner and rub it in just leave it on until u clean him up again. u can give him a benadryl every 6 hrs to see if he stops itching.u can also wash him in warm epsom salted water to soothe his sores and get an antibiotic cream on him. ur vet is the one to call if he doesn't get better after trying this in a day or so. he might need antibiotic or a steriod pill to heal him up.

Sounds like a flea infestation to me. I would take him to the vet and get him dipped in a flea dip solution (over the counter stuff is junk). You will have to spray the area where he lives and flea bomb the house as well...twice. Work with your vet on what to do for the infestation.

It could be "hot spots" lots of purebreed dogs get them, it is basically a heat rash, but they don't know to leave it alone so they chew at it and it gets worse. It can be made worse by fleas. He probably just has sensetive skin, but you don't want it to get worse or infected. Take him to the vet, but remember doctors hate it when you self diagnose, just say "I think he has really sensetive skin, but I'm not sure". Hope he feels better.

If your dog is in pain, he needs to be seen by a vet. Home remedies are just going to postpone the inevitable. In addition, your are causing your dog to suffer longer.
Please take him in to be seen by a vet. Whatever the problem is, things that are left untreated tend to get worse and more expensive.
