I know the answer to this.. I was raised Catholic and I even Baptized my kids. Although I was coming out of religion at the time, but did it out of pressure from my very Christian/Catholic family.

Catholics teach that if the baby dies before it is baptized then it will go to hell. So they baptize very early and then when the child is around 13 he or she goes through Confirmation which is like Baptism except we are old enough to speak for ourselves. With all honestly, I barely remember my Confirmation either though, mostly just the white dress I wore and having to stand for a while. Both are pointless, in regard to the child anyways.

I think kids are too young for religion, period. It's more for the parents piece of mind. No child IS Christian or Hindu or Buddhist. They are children OF Christian or Hindu or Buddhist parents.

I am a baptist, and I have 5 children, non of whom have been baptized. Why you ask, since I am Christian? Well, I will tell you. Being baptized is an outward expression of your faith in Jesus Christ. It does not get you into heaven and you can not proclaim someone elses faith. It does not work that way. There is an age of responsibility, when a child gets old enough to understand what Christ did for us and to accept it. Only when a person has accepted Christ can they truly be baptized.
Hope that helped

i believe you're speaking mainly of the catholic faith. we baptize in infancy to cleanse the soul of original sin. while it is an introduction of sorts, to the faith, there are other rites that one must have before they are considered a catholic. penance, communion then comfirmation, which usually happens around age 13-14 , must be administered before a child can be called a catholic. until then they are being raised in the faith. perhaps a bit over the top or silly to some but it works for us. it basically boils down to the same thing as when others baptize at an older age.

All children are born Hindu, and like Krishna, believe themselves to be the center of the universe. But they are not one with the universe. All they know is immediate self gratification. This selfish attitude must be trained out of them to make them more socially acceptable. Failure to do so results in the antisocial behavior that fills our jails today. Sadly, it's not until then that some of these individuals find God. Did they know God as children? Most will admit to not knowing or caring about God, until their lives had become unmanageable.Studies done in the CA penal system show that most inmates admit to little or no religious education as children. I don't think you should be worried over church doctrine, as much as you should be worried about the chaos around you and how to fix it. This is not done by picking apart someone elses religion. Simply because you're mad at God, doesn't mean that other people that do believe in a God are wrong.

by the way, baptism of babies really is not biblical. What Biblical baptism is , is an outward expression of an inward transformation. So when a person accepts Christ, then they decide to get baptized to follow their Lord in obedience. I was baptized as a baby, however it was more of a dedication to the Lord, by my parents, A baby cannot be a Christian- they have to make up their own minds later- I am so glad that I chose Christ and was baptized later in life, to show my love and obedience to my King. My children did the same- actually we never had our babies baptized- they chose baptism after they made their own decision for Christ.

I think you shouldn't baptize a child until they are at a age of understanding. You're right, the child could choose a different religion from their parents. I did.

Well, you are supposed to be baptized after you've been saved. A baby isn't of the age of accountibility so therefore the baptism is meaningless in the catholic religion. It's purely symbolic that you're going to raise the baby religiously (catholic). You're not a christian until you accept Jesus into your heart & ask for forgiveness of your sins.

I may make a promise to God to raise them in a Christian home, but serving God will truly be their choice. What good what it do for me to push them into believing something? I think that it would probably make them turn from it. Especially when it comes to their beliefs... I want them to want to serve God, not do it out obligation.

You should limit your question to Catholics. I chose God when i understood and today i have a wonderful relationship with Him. Acts 2:38
P.S. God is One, again limit to Catholics
