the TV is a Tosiba with 1080i and the dvd is the new 1080i also but it seeems when I watch the DVD it is 480i, when I watch HD TV it's 1080i, what's the deal|?

MOST old dvds were written in 480i or 480P signal, so whatever you're using will show up on the TV's display as to what the source (the DVD disc itself) is.....

The same should apply to the TV stations you watch....HD stations will send out a 1080i signal whether you're watching

Your TV is fine, it just knows what the signal was recorded in....

Yes normal DVD usualy play in 480i/p. But looks like your DVD player has upsacller within. First you must make sure you connect using correct connection in this case is component cbel (Green, Blue, red) or you can also use HDMI.
Next make sure your upsclling option is activate, if this already done and it still won't play in 1080 than you can start calling the call center.

Check the output settings of your player.
You may have it in "Auto", which may pick the native resolution of the source and let the TV do all the scaling.
If you think the player can do better scaling than the TV, force to output always in 720p.
