Hi maltese,
Without getting too technical flash can sometimes startle the dog and besides that, you will get red eye or the eye will come out white as the eyes directly reflect the light.
To get good photos - take the pics outside cos you will need to use a fast shutter speed and therefore need plenty of light.
And remember - the dog won't "watch the birdie" - he'll "Watch the sausage treat" so take plenty of sausages with you.

My German Shephard is a camera hound. He needs to be in every picture that is taken period. The flash is what gets his attention. He does have trouble sitting still for the pictures sometimes. At first when I got him, I took pictures of him in my lap or holding him. I made him feel safe around the flash and haven't had a problem with it since. Make your pup feel safe when the camera/flash is used and you should have no problems.

I've always taken pics of my dogs since they first came home. I always have my camera for something or another. But when they see me with it sometimes they run from like "Oh God here she comes again". But I find they tolerate it better without the flash.

Depends on the dog,

you have to start taking pictures early in life to get used to it.

it depends. not ALL dogs will be scared of the camera. otherwise, the dog might be scared of the flash. my dog's definitely not scared of cameras. ill take a picture of him & he'll pose for the camera -- CHEESE! :)
