I'm sick of the fuel prices in the UK. I want a car thats got a bit of poke but can run without any modifications or duel tank set up. Are they any cars apart from the mercedes 300/250/190D that would be ok?

Its seems their is quite a few folk that dont know what their talking about here.
Some good answers so far but need more car makes and if possible a contact that could do the job on the car as suggested i think a conversion ( apart from W124 mercedes 300) is the way forward for the UK.
Cheers for the suggestions so far...the comments by the spotty faced teenagers that know jack sh it are tedious.

I run my Citroen ZX 1.9D on used veg oil, but it has a modification in the form of heating on the fuel lines and a second tank for fossil diesel. I have been running it for a year and nearly 10,000 miles now with no problems.
The problem with veg oil is that it is thick and the colder it is, the thicker the oil gets. You can overcome this in one of two ways; either add heating to the fuel line to thin it or mix the oil with a thinner such as ordinary fossil diesel, the colder it gets, the more thinner you add. Alternatively, you can chemically modify the oil by turning it into bio-diesel using a process called transesterification which replaces the glycerides in the oil with a substitute molecule such as ethanol.
The most suitable engines for running straight vegetable oil (SVO known as biofuel) is the PAS XUD1.9D or TD provided it has a Bosch fuel pump. Some models have a CAV/Lucas pump which will break when trying to suck oil.
Due to recent changes in the law, you don't have to pay duty on biofuel for personal use under 2,500 litres per annum.

I know the 300 can, however if you don't add the conversion kit, they recommend mixing it with diesel. Those kits are well worth the money so I would consider having it installed.
In the winter, you will have a hard time starting it unless you add diesel even if you have the conversion kit. The way around this would be to add a heated fuel line, rebuilt your alternator to put out more amperage as well as add an additional battery to keep powering the heated lines while the car is sitting. Canola oil will run all year. Good Luck.

An old non-common rail diesel
something like a BMW or MERC work fine but so do the French diesels frmo Citroen and Peugeot
You will need to fit pipe heaters and a higher pressure injector pump. easy job.
There are plenty of veggie oil forums on the net.
they will also continue to run on diesel if you get short of veg oil

I have heard that there is a way to convert any deisel engine to burn veggie oil. The only ones I have heard of personally have been custom jobs, so that may be worth looking into. I am sure there is someone or some place that you could find that could customize your deisel car to run on it.

any modern diesel can run on vegetable oil but the vegetable oil has to processed or a preheat chamber fitted to the vehicle older diesels are not suitable as the oil seals on older engines will degrade using any form of bio-fuel.http://journeytoforever.org/biodiesel_make.html
