I can accept that.
Maybe that's why the reward for having faith in Jesus Christ is so much greater than the reward for having the faith that your car will start in the morning.

"That it is faith in something that has no precedent?"
THAT is the subtle difference 'they' don't seem to understand.
The chances the sun will rise, toaster will work, jug will boil, car will start, traffic will be on the road, etc, ALL have precedents and ALL are likely to happen again tomorrow morning BUT this is nothing to do with faith.
FAITH has no precedent - faith is a belief without evidence.
Faith is nothing more than the deliberate suspension of disbelief; it’s an act of will; it’s not a state of grace it’s a state of choice.
Faith by definition is unexamined and therefore it has to be among the shallowest of experiences.

Those examples of real life things are not about having faith. Rather, they're about having expectations based on experience. However, the only way to experience a god is with faith (belief without evidence, or despite evidence to the contrary). Hence, the person who made the comparisons was wrong.

How do you think the sun came up the first time?
"Faith is the assured expectation of things hoped for, the evident demonstration of realities though not beheld." (Heb. 11:1)
We have faith in things due to past actions. You pay a man for a service. That is based on previous results doing similar things with the same man or others. We learn what NOT to do by similar circumstances.

All those faiths are different in that you've started your car before, woken up before, seen the sun rise before, and sat on perfectly good chairs before, so you are trusting in something that is usually the same.
None of us have seen God, talked face-to-face with Him, or witnessed His first Ascension, yet we still trust in something that can't be proved.
"To hear with my heart, to see with my soul, to be guided by a hand I can not hold. To trust in a way that I can not see, that's what faith must be."

Faith is believing in something you WANT to be true, despite the fact that there is no logical reason to do so. KNOWING and FAITH are diametrically opposed. Anybody who would say they KNOW something to be true without any evidence to support it, is intellectually dishonest. Including us atheists.

a definition of "faith"...
Belief that does not rest on logical proof or material evidence.
You have Faith in God because you know the TRUTH. But Faith after knowing the Truth is Trusting in God.
You shouldn't put your faith in worldly things because you know that worldly things have flaws.
God is Flawless and won't fail, ESPECIALLY if you Believe in His Will.
Interpreting the times, or "sign of the times" is something that comes along with "common sense" .
If you know your car might not start.. but you say "I have faith that it will", and it doesn't, isn't that saying pretty much the same thing about God when something doesn't go through the way we want it too?
When we put our faith in flawed things.. then that means we have and use the same type of faith to BELIEVE IN God with..
True Faith is KNOWING that God's Will is TRUTH. Knowing the Truth, you will accept that EVERYONE and EVERYTHING has it's place and TIMING in this world...
I have more teachings on Faith and creation if you want to see...

Faith in the divine has on prededent. God said to us that he would send us his son to set us free, it was foretold centuries before it happened. He said he would send his son to set us free. He sent us his son just as he promised he would. Faith is not different. God asks us to put our faith in him and trust he will keep his word so we do.
