What type of paint do I need to buy for my students to decorate a pet rock with color? FYI...I'm an elementary school teacher.

for that age I would buy tempra or poster paint, that should work just fine. It has no fumes and it is safe with children. If use acrylic it would scratch off way too easily. Wow sounds like a fun project! I often do paint on what i call the natural canvas. rocks, stone, ceramic, bricks, leather anything that seems to come directly from the earth. when the kids are done painting, I would suggest you spray the rocks with a sealer or fixant lightly so the paints will not come off. they might need to set on a table for a bit. I recommend a product called "Preserve it" Its great stuff and drys a lot faster than the others. Have fun!

Any paint will do. I suppose you have some already in your 'arsenal' that they are used to using.

You need however to give the rock a base-coat. You better prepare that yourself. The stuff you use to make this foolproof coat is gesso. It is pretty nasty stuff to get out of clothes and anything else for that matter. That is basically why it is such a good primer. So not good to let the kids play with that.

After the painting is done line them all up (outside on some old newspaper) and apply a coat of clear varnish from a can and you are done and they will last a lifetime.

Hi,

There are some artists who take advantage of rocks' shapes to paint animals on them. If you perform a search engine, I'm sure that you'll find some.
Now, you should take a look at Wetcanvas. It's an artists' community with many forums, namely one for teachers and another for students. Then you have those about mediums and so on.
Here's the link : http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums.
You can found an answer probably at the Mix Media forum.
And don't forget to check the Teachers Toolbox.

Best regards,

José
