MEXICO CITY - It sounds like a fast-food grudge match: Taco Bell is taking on the homeland of its namesake by reopening for the first time in 15 years in Mexico.

Defenders of Mexican culture see the chain's re-entry as a crowning insult to a society already overrun by U.S. chains from Starbucks and Subway to Kentucky Fried Chicken.

"It's like bringing ice to the Arctic," complained pop culture historian Carlos Monsivais.

It's so that American tourists can enjoy the "Mexican" food they are used to.

Besides, are there any true Mexican fast food restaurants? It's a whole other market that the existing restaurants are not catering to. If real Mexican restaurants offer fast food, Taco Bell will be out of business in no time.

Taco Bell is opening restaurants in Mexico so that visiting Americans have some Mexican food they can recognize.

No. I've been to a Taco Bell on the Texas/Mexico border and it was much better than the ones we have in the middle of the state.

Does McDonald's open more restaurants in the U.S. because they think the burgers that everyone else sells aren't original enough? No, it's just a cheap, fast food restaurant.

Well, we have "American Food" restaurants everywhere (McDonalds et.al.) so why not put Taco Bell all over Mexico and Panda Express all over China.
