I'm absolutely putting out the money for a photographer for my wedding. But I'm wondering if I really need to have a video.
I could buy a camcorder and ask a trustworthy relative to film the pertinent stuff (ceremony, first dance, cake cutting). What are your thoughts?

Since it is a one time event in your lifetime, and at that, probably one of the most important times in your life, and considering also that your children and children's children might be very interested in seeing this, it is probably a good investment to spend a lot of money on keeping this even beautifully captured and stored by hiring a professional.

We had a friend do our video. He was a film major in college so that helped, but I think any electronically competent person could do a decent job. Maybe have the person come practice with you at the rehearsal. Then he/she will also have an idea of where to stand and where you'll be standing and all that stuff. I'm glad we got a video. I don't care if it wasn't professionally done...yeah, there was some jiggle, but with a tripod it's not so bad (I would definitely use a tripod if possible). It was nice to watch since I was so nervous during the ceremony, I got to actually see my ceremony. It was a beautiful ceremony too so I'm glad we got all the words and reactions of us and our guests. He also got video of the intros and dances. Anyway, I don't think you need to go all out and hire a videographer as long as you don't mind a little bit of imperfection. I think in that case, home video will be good enough.

I had my uncle do mine. You set up 2 camcorders--you need at least 2 angles. One at the back of the church and one in the choir loft that will be aimed at your faces. Then when the ceremony is over, you take both to the reception and set them both up there.

My uncle did it and they turned out great. We have 4 tapes of raw footage and eventually will pay someone to put it together in one DVD for us. It's hilarious. I'm doing to get 2 made--one that is the blooper reel that has my bridesmaids yawning huge and me cracking up when the preacher asked my husband if he would take the best man (I don't know what was going through his head). Then at the end...my maid of honor wouldn't let go of my dress, which left my best man alone and no one knew how to walk out of the church. It was as if we never rehearsed and was hilarious. I think I'd watch that way more often than a serious video--I have pictures for that.

Since you'll have the pictures, you won't really need the video too so why not save some money and ask a relative to do it.

I'm not getting a video for my wedding but I am getting the best photog. How many times will you have the time to sit down and watch your whole wedding video?
I guess it's ok to ask someone to film, but they might not want to because they'll be missing all the important parts because they are concentrated on filming this for you. I will not ask anyone to film but if anyone wants to film with their own camera, at their own pace, that's perfectly fine!

We didn't hire a videographer (but shelled out for professional photography for the portraits), but instead one friend of the family and one cousin did the filming, then my BIL put the two together for us. It pretty much was all that was necessary, and we still watch it occasionally.

I am not having a videographer at my wedding. I know a number of people who paid for one but they never watch their wedding video. I think the pictures will be fabulous but I don't see the need for the video.

We had my husband's uncle do ours, we had me walking down the aisle and then 20 minutes of his beautiful loafers.

We didnt care because we didnt ask for the video to begin with, it was just done. But if you ask a relative you gotta make sure that they know what they are doing.

DON'T DO IT!!!!! Hire a videographer...my uncle (who is supposedly tech-savvy) was filming mine...until he realized 3/4 of the way through the ceremony that he didn't have the stupid thing zoomed in, so I have NOTHING! PLEASE pay the extra money, you'll be so glad you did!
