How many of you have chosen to have dogs, cats or some other critter, instead of children? No religious ties connected to this, Just wondering for myself. I have three sons, One 19, one 17, one 5 and we are in the process of finalizing the adoption of a little girl. As soon as one moves out, my wife gets a replacement.

why would atheists, pagans and people of no religion in particular decide to have animals instead of children? I’m just curious.

I am a pagan, and I have animals and children! I have daughters aged 29 and 14 and sons aged 26 and 10, I also have a dog, a rabbit, 4 lizards and a pond full of fish, frogs and toads, but I don't feel any of this really has anything to do with the fact that I am pagan.

I have also has hamsters, mice, gerbils, rats and countless other furries, but that has more to do with the children!

Atheists ARE "people of no religion." Atheist means "one who does not believe in any god or higher power."

And anyway, being a Shintoist (you'd call me a pagan), I suppose I can answer.
I have a cat, and will be getting two ferrets; I also have an 8-year-old daughter.

I'm not sure what this has to do with anything, since non-Christians have children too. As for getting 'replacements,' that sounds kind of cold. You can't replace a kid you've raised; you can only raise another.

I've raised 2 kids to adulthood. Now am helping raise 2 more kids. Only the 1st was bio-related. I have a dog and a cat who sometimes thinks she is a dog (yes she even drinks from the toilet and chases cars).

Okay first off pagans fit nowhere near your little group so that you can change! We have religion!

Secondly not all of us believe that children are a bad thing. Most of us would love to have children(WHEN WE ARE READY).

But than again this just goes to show how little people know!

Your question makes little sense, but… I’m agnostic, and I have cats at this point in my life because they know how to take themselves potty & are really good at reminding me to feed & water them. I don’t think I have the attention span or patience for two legged children yet.

Why did you ask the question is R&S if there is no religious connection, then?
Did you ever think your wife may have had it up to her eyebrows with males - with you as their "leader", and wanted to enjoy the company of a FEMALE for a change?
If you are of the group of religious believers who claim that males are superior to women, that might explain it.

I really don't see what you're getting at. I'm an atheist who has two grown sons. I've had a dog, various birds, and fish. What's your point?
