Caution here.
The question on modeling portfolios has been asked again and again...to boil this down in an answer that does not have any commercial value, keep in mind there are many sharks out there swimming in the glamor pool.
Read Nina Blanchard's "How to Break Into Modeling and Acting" for a realistic, honest no-nonsense reference on this.
Portfolios are to modeling as a Resume is to a job. You will also need "one sheets" or "composites" to use for handouts and publicity as well as your portfolio.
Don't fall for the "I can do a good job cheap" trap. If you are not attached to an agency, and are relying on the "do it yourself" approach to modeling, you are going to be hard pressed into making a living from it....But, to "get your feet wet," I would look at what other current "A" listers have done in their updated portfolios and composites and practice emulating that. Unless you live in the "Big 5:" of New York, London, Paris, Rome or Los Angeles, it will be harder for you to find a quality A-list photographer. But don't waste your money on the expense as what you need is a great "head shot", and a better agency to pick you up. If you have the talent, the look and willing to make the necessary sacrifices, you will make it. If you don't, be prepared for a life of "wanabe" frustration.
"There is no such thing as free lunch," as P.T. Barnum said. Just like any other field, you need be where the customers are and be willing to spend the time and effort to make your dream come true.

Check out some sites where you can try to get interviews or send in pics.
Well you would need to go to a photographer to get some good pics of you for your book and then go show them to an agent that would be able to help you advance or get a job. But be careful you don't get ripped off!
