Depends how mature your 6 year old is....

With our 6 y/o son - if he asks - we answer it. In very simple and frank terms. He knows that the "mommy" holds the eggs and the "daddy" fertilizes them. The exact way this happens, he hasn't asked about, other than their "private" areas are involved.

Then the "mommy" carries the baby while it develops and then has the baby out her "privates" when its time to be born.

We have ALWAYS prefaced and ended sucha discussion with a talk about how some subjects are only for kids to talk about with their parents and this is one of them. If he wants to know - he can trust us to give a truthful answer.

However - it is expected that he does NOT discuss these subjects with any other kids / friends / or at school. Just like there are certain things you cannot do in public (show / touch your pirvates / etc.... or touch others / etc...) there are certain topics that you do not discuss in public - this is one of them.

If we ever find out that he has violated this trust - then we won't be able to answer some of his questions anymore....

He's a very curious kid, so far this avenue has kept him factually educated, without (to our knowledge) him educating any other kids with info their parents are not ready for them to have / understand as of yet.

Seems to work for us.

just answer the questions do not give more info than is needed, she will probably be quite satisfied with the briefest of information, my daughter asked me how a baby got into my friends tummy i told her it grew from an egg, and that was that she never asked anything else for ages, I did have a good book called the birds and the bees it was aimed at kids this age but can't remember the author sorry, I picked it up at a dorling kinsley party, it was very good because it went into the reproduction of all things not just human, animals flowers that sort of thing with out the sex issue have a look on amazon for it or something similar

Had this decision with my oldest daughter when she was 4 because I wanted to know if she knew where her new baby sister came from. It went like this.
Me: Do you know where baby's come from.
Her: Yes, they come from the hospital!
Me: I thought they came from mommies tummy.
Her: Yes mommy you are right!
Me: How do you think they get there.
Her: The doctor put the baby there.
Me: I think that daddy would be very mad at the doctor if he put the baby in mommies tummy. Daddy put the baby there.

That was enough to satisfy the situation.

If she's asking, she's old enough for you to tell her the truth. There's a great book called "Where Did I Come From". My 5 year old asks to check it out from the library every few months or so.

say that mommy has an egg in her and since babies are part daddy part mommy (ex:traits from you, traits from your spouse), and once part of daddy and part of mommy are together, mommy's egg starts to make a baby in it. but mammals dont lay eggs, they're born alive. you can show her pictures from ultrasounds and things like that. when shes about 10 TV will explain s**!

I just said that mommies and daddies love each other and decide to make a baby together, and then it starts to grow in the mommy's tummy. See how much more information she wants, often they have very specific questions that can be answered generally without getting graphic.

babies are made out of love from mommy and daddy. Mommy has an egg and daddy has sperm. (I wouldn't go much further into it at age 6) The baby is in mommy's uterus. You could show her some pics of baby in uterus and how the baby grows.

there's a great book called "Mummy laid an egg" by Babette Cole. I got it for my son when he was about 5 and it didn't feel weird at all.
