Well, I'm Chinese. And as of ten years ago, the tension is still pretty high. The Chinese government wanted the Japans to admit the fact that the Japanese generals and soldiers killed, raped and tortured thousands of Chinese citizens during WWI and WWII. But the Japanese government refused to acknowledge the "false" allegations.
The Japanese government is foolish. To recognize something that's true, is admitting their own flaws and past mistakes. But since they denied everything, they are view as liars and known for rewriting Japanese history. So for them, it's better to profess their ancestral follies rather than lie.

During 70-80s, Sino-Japan relationship experienced real honeymoon when China received huge amounts of economic support from Japan. After 90s, the relation was frozen. Hard-liners of Japanese government refused to apologize their wrong doings in the past and insisted on visiting Yasukuni Shrine. In China, the public opinion towards Japan and Japanese people can be roughtly defined as hatred and fear. Hate their behavior of dehumanization in China, fear of Japan's rising military might and economic strength. Now, both of the two countries have made some efforts to rebuild the mutual trust.

The idea is deep anger, though not hate. The killing of milliions of Chinese during the japanese occupation did not go very well. My whole family is 100% chinese, and no one in the family thinks that Japan is anywhere near sane. So it's anger for the most part. Yes, the Chinese government does want an apology, but they haven't gotten it. Anyways, an old Chinese myth is that Japan was formed when a Chinese man brought 80 boys and girls with him to the island, and formed a nation.

Having lived in China for 2 years I can say that the vast majority of Chinese people that expressed an opinion about Japanese people to me HATED them, despite the fact that most of them had never met a Japanese person.
They are taught to hate them because of the wars and conflicts of the past. They talk about the awfull attrocities that the Japanese commited, especially in Nanjing and Manchuria. ( Despite not being told the truth about their Govt's role in these incidents )
I found it strange that they did not feel this way about Chairman Mao, who after all, was responsible for far more Chinese deaths than the Japanese. ( Estimates vary from 10 - 50 MILLION ) Indeed he is revered as the " Father of the nation " and has an almost God like status.
They complain that Japanese politicians visit the shrine where their war criminals are buried but continue to visit the places in China that are associated with Mao and the other Chinese leaders that were responsible for the GENOCIDE commited against the Chinese people. I find this both strange and hypocritical.
I believe the reason this is the case is because A) The Chinese Govt. encourages the people to vent their anger on foreign people and countries to deflect the anger that many people have towards their own Govt. and B) The Chinese people themselves will NEVER admit that either they or their Govt. have ever made mistakes. It's always somebody else' fault.
The Chinese people should be taught to forgive but not forget, just as we here in Europe have been towards the German people and also to differentiate between the Japanese MILITARY and the Japanese PEOPLE.
Perhaps then they will start to admit the mistakes that they and their Govt. have made in the past and start to address them.
Will the current Chinese Govt. apologise to its own people for the attrocities commited by their predecessors?

Honestly speaking, I think business relations and cultural exchange between Japan and China are very good. The relation brings wealth to both nations. Today lots rich Chinese tourists are coming to Japan every year.

As for the historical issue, I think it is difficult to reach understanding each other. Because the way of thinking are different.

Politically cardinal issues reached agreement when China and Japan signed each other in 1972. And Japan also released apology statement which China government agreed. Actually Japanese PM Tanaka and Chinese PM Zhou Enlai, and Mr.Mao Zedong had a meeting about this issue.

Japan started to pay tons of money to China. Total sum is bigger than the one that Germany did to Europe. But Chinese government have NOT told this to citizens.
Now China stick to individual issues. It is unfair. Why China signed and received money?

But I understand Chinese characteristics.

Chinese people never allow the past criminals, even for Chinese people.
See 秦桧 (Qin Hui). He was the Prime Minister of the Song Dynasty. He and his wife are still presumed as criminals or betrayals. I am hearing some Chinese people spit to their statues even now.
I think this temperament and the culture of a lesson in public or a show trial still exist in today's China.

Japan is different. If the criminal was once judged and punished, people don't/can't accuse the criminal anymore. If someone did it, he/she would be a defamer or accused as abusing human rights.
Japanese doesn't admire criminal A, but also never accuse them anymore. This is Japanese characteristics.

Viewing comments in this section, it is seen that it is very difficult to start 2nd life for criminals in China.

Have you ever heard about "the Massacre of Nanjing"?

Google it, 300,000 chinese were killed ( including a huge number of children, women).

There are also a great many massacres elsewhere in China.

IT's only a tiny bit THOSE JAPANESE DID TO CHINA.
