I always make up some bogus story. One time, a telemarketer called trying to get me to switch phone services, and I told him I would like to, except my house burned down, and I didn't have a telephone anymore. The dummy acted like he believed me...and there's no way he could have. He called MY house phone after all, and when he asked for me, I said it was me. He didn't call back.

telemarketing is like those pesty people in a mall trying to stop everyone and try to sell their product which i hate.

I handle the calls by lifting the phone and saying some random stuff like, "would you like some fries with that?" and then keep on saying "sir I am asking you if you want some fries with that, I am not interested in buying into your product."

By hanging up your just letting yourself say that you are not interested at the moment.

This sentence that you said right here, "Is it hard to be polite to someone that is just doing their job?" some people really do not care for the person they are fixed at the company, not to you, but the company. Some people think by yelling at the telemarketer they are getting their message to the company. However, the telemarketer is not the company. Telemarketers are often placed in the middle of the problems.

I am also on the do not call list. I used to try to be polite, I realize they are doing a job. What makes it hard to be polite is that whole thing where they do the rebuttals when you say no. I don't have time to sit on the phone and say no ten times to ten different questions. The other big problem I had w/telemarketers was that they seemed to purposefully call at dinner time and at 8:00 when my children were already sleeping. Before the do not call list I used to try to cut them off as politely as possible and tell them to remove me from their list, thank you, have a nice night, goodbye.

As long as there is even a shred of a chance that they will get a sale, companies won't stop telemarketing.

I politely and promptly say to them that as a general rule, I will never buy anything from a company that has telemarketed me, even if I need it.

Companies should put the money spent on telemarketing into improving their product or reducing it's price for sales rather than outbound calling.

I think if Johnny Depp still worked as a telemarketer, people would be much nicer to telemarketers. :)

I would get annoying calls all the time at my old number. I looked up on the internet ways to annoy telemarketers. I really enjoyed that. I moved and got a new phone number that no telemarketers call. I kind of miss it now.

I was a telemarketer for about 2 days. I couldn't stand being yelled at all day long. It is true that if you yell at them, they usually just hit the button to keep you on the call list. They did at the place I worked anyway. I agree that it is annoying, but after going through it myself, I tend to feel for them, and just politely decline what they have to offer.

Put your number on the national do not call list, this should help.

Most telemarketers pronounce your name wrong, if this is the case, then say, "sorry, there's no one here by that name," and then hang up. Don't raise your voice or show them that they aggravate you, or they'll call twice as much; some of them can be nasty.

I understand they're only doing their job, but being hung up on is going to come with the territory. They can get another job if they don't like it! Lawyers work long hours, Waitstaff stands on their feet all day, trash guys work in the rain or snow, and telemarketers get hung up on! Its the way of the world. If you can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen!

True they will call back if you hang up on them but 98% of them can't take NO for an answer & continue to stalk & harrass at all hours of the day. They can flip burgers instead of annoying people.

I'm just glad a lot are recordings now, so I can just hang up. I try to be polite, but when they insist I hang up or hand off the phone to my three year old, that usually solves the problem.
