Practice doing a BFT (Battle Fitness test) with your mates jog as a group 1 and half mile then turn around and run back on your own and do it under 10 minutes 30 and you should be fine, it sound like you are already preparing well and you will get fitter as you progress through training. don't worry so much about bulking up as you need to increase more in stamina, i.e running, bulking up will come more as you get older.

What Regiment are you thinking of joining ? Are you going Infantry or a Corps ? looks like I am the only one answering you from a British perspective, but the americans advice on here is pretty sound too and worth taking note of.

Good luck

The first answer about 1% and 99% is true!
I was in the Army and can vouch that it is more mental than it is physical (with that saying it is can be pretty physical).
The environment is setup for them to break you down and build you back up to be a mentally and physically strong soldier.
To prepare physically I would work up to running 3-4 miles a day atleast 4-5 days a week; also find out your age group's (the age you plan to join) number of pushups and situps required to max out your PT score.
Below is a link to find out what your PT score would be with certain stats on your 2 mile run, pushups and situps.
Good luck!

Basic training is 1 % physical and 99% mental

It's not about having your body already trained so that it will be "easy"

It's about pushing yourself beyond your limits so that you develop the mental confidence to know that you can do what seems to be impossible

you need to understand no one can predict whether you will pass or fail in training by you giving us a description of your stats. If your normal in the brain and are in decent shape than you will pass. Its nothing you cant do , all you have to do is want it bad enough..How can i tell you that you will or wont pass, this is impossible..good luck

It's a mental stress game that's all. Once you realize that its easy. but remember every one has a burning point make sure you know yours because it will be tested by your fellow trainees and not your trainer

Take a positive attitude and sense of humor with you, and when you get through you'll say "That wasn't too bad!"
