I am getting my half sleeve soon, but how long on average do they take? I have moderate arms and my tattoo does have alot of detail, but not that much. However, I can only afford 2 hours at the moment but my artist says she can't outline my tattoo in 2 hours, she needs 4. If my outline takes 4 hours, then how long will the total thing be? Why is it so long, I read many places that it takes 4-5 hours to be completed.

4 hours for the outline of a half sleeve is right. When coloring in the tattoo takes less time because they can turn the tattoo machine up and tattoo faster but with doing the outline it's a smaller needle and the speed is on slow because they have to make sure all the lines are perfect.

You have to get all the outline done in one go because the stencil will never go back on perfect. When coloring in the tattoo you could have short sessions but the outline is the most important. If you can't afford it wait till you can.

a half sleeve that will only tak 4-5 hours can't be one with THAT much detail... either that or the artist who did it was crazy fast. maybe your artist just isn't that fast, i have found that different artist have different speeds and it really is nice when you have a faster artist, over the past two years my artist has gotten a lot faster.
you definitely have to get it all outlined at once so just save up your money til you can afford the 4 hour session.
actually... thinking about it 4 hours for the outline of a half sleeve is really long. my whole back took 3 1/2 hours to outline, but if your artist is really talented maybe it'll be worth it.
my dad's half sleeve tattoo took almost 10 hours to complete and he had it done in one day.

There are a few variables: how fast does your artist work, how intricate is your tattoo, how big is the tattoo?

Don't rush the tattoo artist, if you're not happy with what they are telling you on time and cost, then get another artist to give you an appraisal. I have a medium size tattoo that required a lot of outlining on my upper arm, and it took over 4 hours. So, 4 hours for a half sleeve outline sounds accurate to me, and maybe a little quick depending on the amount of detail.

I have two half sleeves, one per arm. each one took between 5-6 1\2 hours. sometimes longer depending on how well you take it and how many breaks the artist takes. the color in is usually quicker, they just scrape the hell out of your arm to color in the outline. I would assume you are looking at about 6 hours. I had both my sleeves done in one day because once i'm in the "zone" i'm looking to have it finished and not have to come back to endure another 2 or more hours.

I have Phil Ochs tattooed on my arm (folks singer) I even have "Never Die" and a rose tattooed throughout my feet, with a tigerbat above the feet on my left foot for Tiger Army. I see me getting a pair extra musician tattoos. I have an Ochs lyric tattoed around the again of my neck (Sacred are the scars) and an Op Ivy lyric around the insides of each fingers (It's lovely I might say... I shouldn't have it every other approach.) I'm considering a sizzling-rod tradition tat, skulls and roses and a banner, gotta select the lyric to move within the banner even though. As it stands at present, I'd in general pick "In loss of life as in existence, I will come up" or "My judgment of right and wrong contains the load of blood."
