After the 3-4 weeks of boot camp when their mail is held from them, do they get mail delivered everyday, or once a week? Also when is the first time they get to write, and how often can they write home?

The Navy does not hold their mail for the first 3-4 weeks. They get mail every day except Sunday. They can write letters every Sunday, they don't have much time that day but both of my kids managed to write every week.

I am the father of two kids in the Navy, both went through boot camp this year.

Boot camp must be different now, I went thru Navy Boot Camp 20 years ago and they held our mail the first month. After that we got mail every sunday (early afternoon). It didn't really bother us that we got no mail because we were occupied (running, marching, pushups, etc) from 6am until lights out at 9pm, there was no free time for sitting around reading mail.

The Navy must deliver the mail as promptly as possible, even in Boot Camp. They must follow USPS guidelines and rules. Mail can not be held as punishment.

mail is NOT Held..it is against regs to do so.

while in training, mail is delivered every day. while underway or otherwise deployed, mail will be delivered sporadically. depends on where you are, you could get a delivery weekly..or monthly.

they are given free time every Sunday during Boot camp to take care of stuff. if they choose to write, great. they are not forced to do so.

I got NO letters from mine the entire nine weeks.

It usually depends on their training. The person that handles their mail will deliver it when they can, but they do try not to deliver it during certain training. i.e. in the mud and rain. When we had our field excersize, they only delivered it when we had chow "get-togethers" for hot chow. First Sergeant would hand over each platoons mail to the Platoon Sergeant, and he would hand it out after we ate. Most of the time, we ate MRE's where we were at, so didn't get mail.
Packages were only issued in barracks on "barracks days" when we would clean barracks and field gear, do laundry and other rear area administrative task. If we were in barracks, we would get mail every evening after dinner chow. Some people (disiplinary problems and over-weights) would have packages withheld over have to open them in front of the Drill Instructors, who would inspect them for candy/snacks (if overweight) or drugs/cigarettes (in in trouble). Of course this was Army Basic at Fort Benning, GA back in 1985, so they may have changed some things, and I have no idea on Navy Basic.

the navy holds your mail? wow!

in the army mail is considered a moral/welfare activity and therefore is never "held"
