Who cares? Happened thousands of years ago...Wasn't there, couldn't tell you. What I do know is that the story is about the meager/meek being able to challenge and defeat those with means. Goliath was a giant of a man a well equipped soldier...David was meek/meager man with but a sling and stone. Read the symbolic meaning not the literal.

1 Samuel 17:49-51
Reaching into his bag and taking out a stone, he slung it and struck the Philistine on the forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell facedown on the ground.
So David triumphed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone; without a sword in his hand he struck down the Philistine and killed him.
David ran and stood over him. He took hold of the Philistine's sword and drew it from the scabbard. After he killed him, he cut off his head with the sword.

People don't kill, stone's kill. Let's outlaw stones! The NSA (National Stone Association) will come and get you for rejecting the use of stones. We throw stones at rabbits and deer and bigger stones are used for mountain lions.

If you throw a stone to a person and that person dies it is commonly said that you killed that person with a stone, so did David.
