Tell me what makes you tip two or three bucks more than usual at a restarant like Kelsey's Boston pizza or something.

I don't know what kelsey's is, but tipping well comes from knowing that the norm is to tip 15% of the total bill. Or, maybe you just have to have been a server to understand.

I was a waitress in college, and many people dont understand that the tip is important. Depending on the restaurant, a server has to tip-share with the bus boy, the bartender, and sometimes the cook other waitresses. So, a good chunk of the money they make goes back to the restaurant and the other employees. if you tip $4, the server is only going home with like $2 of that money.

But I'd say fast, friendly service, individual attention, and anticipating a customers needs before they ask. for example, if they noticed you needed a drink refill and refilled it before you even had a chance to ask.

I always tip well but will tip really good service people even more. To me, a truly good waiter seems nearly invisible yet all of my needs are taken care of.

Sometimes a waiter ignores you and the flow of your dining experience is interrupted every time you need something or other. Other times a waiter is too intrusive; constantly interrupting your conversation with questions. Sometimes they hover around and make you feel self-conscious like a dog waiting for you to throw the stick for him.

But if you luck out and get a really good one, somehow, you have a lovely dining experience, your conversations flow without interruption, your glass is always refreshed, your courses handled in and out and you hardly even notice the waiter was there at all.

That kind of professional attention to detail will easily score a 25 to 30% tip from me. Even more on occasion.

The last time I got service that good was at Emeril's Delmonico Steakhouse at the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas. We had execllent service at the Top of the World Restaurant atop the tower at the Stratosphere Hotel in Las Vegas, too. The wait staff of the Cruis Ship Mercury in the Manhattan Restaurant (Celebrity Cruise Lines) were terriffic as well.

Know your menu. I always tip a server more if they have menu and drink recommendations and if they can answer any questions I have. I also tip servers who are friendly with a good personality without being overly obnoxious. I like to be checked on periodically but I get put off when server interrupt a conversation, so if it's possible, try to wait for a break or at least less engrossed moment at the table.

I tip well anyway, but I will gt really generous (like a 10 on a $50 meal), if service was excellent. I will also tip well above and beyond if I order Chinese or pizza and it's freezing outside. If it's freezing and the pizza is hot, that's another reason to tip very well.

If I felt the food was good and I had good service. I always tip regardless but will not give a good tip when I feel that I didn't get a good value out of my dining experience.

For massages, I'll tip good if I felt great during the service. I'll stiff if I know I'm not coming back. It costs too much in the first place so why give more money.

When your drink glass is never empty; when your food arrives within a suitable period: still hot; when the waiter continuously comes to the table to make sure you are comfortable and the food is fine; when the waitress is professional, not flirty or makes a rude comment; uniform is pressed or no stains on apron, etc; and when the food is delicious. All these factors make up a good tip.

its all about the food.
it better be good.
I have paid $20 or more per plate at many restaurant's and found the food bland. menu choices limited.
I do not worry about tipping, if I am never coming back.

as for service I find that its mostly the managements fault for most poor service. they determine staff hours, number of staff, and make sure things like ketchup is available or not.

the only place I have ever eaten that had good food was the Hungry Hunter (a steakhouse). they also had good service. so I was happy to tip them well.

I tip well if my drink is kept full and I get prompt service. The waitress is nice and checks on me once or twice during a meal.
I used to be a waitress and I got pretty good tips by keeping an eye on my tables for signs that they needed something.

if the service is good and the server is not too annoying (coming over too often to check up on anything).

Also, if it's a place I visit often I'll tip well. I want to be remembered and get good service all the time. If I am not coming back to that place again and the service was under "ok" I may not leave anything at all.

Friendliness, good service, good food, apologies for lateness when necessary. I think someone who is a people person and good at serving others is guaranteed a great tip. I tip regardless unless it is REALLY bad service but a great tip comes to those who earn it! I am a waitress, well, was one for years, so I appreciate someone who knows their job well and isn't afraid of the terms waiter/waitress. I don't care for "server".
