I'll be in Jackson Hole during December, so any advice on the best gear is greatly appreciated, too.

Especially for first timers, since ski gear is so personal, you really should get it with the help of a store, live and in person. Boot fit is so critical, buying online seems ridiculous to me. Skis themselves aren't too bad bought online but if you're a first timer you really have no idea what to get. A real person would really help

This depends on how trendy you want to be. The best place for ski gear on the cheep is the Good Will. I found some amazing Haute Route powder skis in like new condition for $20 bucks. An amazing ski that some powder skiers swear by. good warm coats, sweaters and outerwear for a couple of bucks. You won't be stylish but you will be comfortable and not spend a mint! An you will be amazed. Many times you will find last years top of the line ski gear on the racks in like new condition. The real style-rs on the slope are known to throw out their gear every year and buy new. Your benefit if you can find something in your size!

Suggest you rent "beginner package" instead of buy new gear ($$$). Rent gear at the ski shop at base of the mountain (or in town of Jackson)... Or if you plan to ski again this season, you should consider to rent a "seasonal ski gear package" at your local ski shop. While in Jackon Hole - Be sure to visit the Mangy Moose [ www.mangymoose.net ] after skiing and hit Bubba's (in town) for BBQ
