The Bible is of inestimable value, which is why the Church selected its contents--because they are full of truth and free of error. The four gospels, in particular, are the best biographies of Jesus from the ancient world.
HOWEVER, neither Jesus nor the Church ever taught that the Christian faith should be based exclusively on a book.
Jesus did not write a book--he preached, healed, worked miracles, and suffered for our redemption. For the first hundred years of Christianity, the New Testament had not been fully written. For the first 400 years of Christianity, the definitive canon of works had not been selected.
John 21:25 explains that most of what Jesus said and did is not included in the Bible: "Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written."
The truths not included in the Bible, gleaned by the disciples as eyewitnesses and confidants of Jesus, were taught orally, written by the Fathers of the Church, and preserved as Sacred Tradition.
The Bible cannot be understood without the testimony of the original catholic-orthodox Church.
Cheers,
Bruce

The Christian faith is not based on a book - It's based on Jesus Christ - He is the Word of God. The Bible is a book written about Jesus, and it carries His teachings, and His love letters to His bride. It contains a lot of what we need to know to live out our lives, but the basis of our salvation is a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
I do understand that this point is missed by many who claim to be Christians.

He didn't - there was no book except the Jewish scriptures (now the Old Testament).
As a matter of fact, his teachings weren't written down until years after his death. There was no context for him to say those words in.
[edit]
Bible alone comes from Roman Catholic Church doctrine. The Bible is the inspired word of God since the Council of Nicaea compiled the words of the Apostles and Disciples of Christ into what is now known as The New Testament. They called any other scripture outside this NT heresy. Everything about NT being the inspired work of God, Christs' divinity, The Holy Trinity, (the list goes on) was "decided" by the Nicaean Council.
Protestants today criticize the RCC for its use of "idols" and worshiping Mary, but they still hold on to the dogma surrounding Christ and the NT that support their faith.

In Matthew 28, Jesus instructs us to teach all the world about the things that He has told the disciples. They wrote down those teachings for us and they are of course based on previous Scriptures given to us by God through Moses and the Prophets.
Through the Apostle Paul's letters we learn that we are to test all things against those Scriptures in order to be certain about our faith.
Hope that helps.

You don't get it. The New Testament wasn't written when Jesus was around. It's about him.
Ideas are expressed in books. How is a religion supposed to be expressed for centuries, if not in a book!? Don't fear the book. It's just a book. God is in the heart and that is what Jesus said, over and over again.

...Jesus never established any "religion"...(man did)... Jesus clearly indicated that "He was the Way, the Truth and the Life" and all come to the Father through Him... The early followers of Jesus were called followers of "The Way"... The word "Christian" is a contemporary word established by the Church of Rome...sadly, "they" have taken Gods Word far far from what Jesus intended it to be... setting up a system of "religious" gymnastics, traditions, dogma and decrees given by old men who dress up like they belong on a chess board, holding their followers captive in the words of these Old man of Rome...(God forbid).

Well, He didn't say "READ THE BIBLE" but He did say to keep His word in your heart. The way to do that is to read it and live by it.
Proverbs 2:1-5 My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you, 2 turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding....
Thy Word is a lamp unto my fee and a light unto my path.....
In the begining was the word, and the word was with God and the word was God, the same was in the beginning with God.
