Myself and my roommate have three cats, and one of the three would not stop doing his business in the bath tub so we put a little water in there, and the cat started going in the bathroom sink. We tried everything, and then came across an article in the newspaper that we tried and it worked. Here is basically what it said:
Make your cat want to use the litter box. If they are not using it, then try to figure out why. Here are some things to try:
1. Change the brand of litter you use. Some cats do not like the feel of the big beads of litter, while others do not like the real fine litter. It can cause them to "sink" and not feel like they are on sturdy ground, so they will avoid it. The big pieces of litter can get caught between their paws, and be uncomfortable. So switch litter to see if that helps.
2. Some cats do not like litter boxes with lids. I am not sure why, but it could be that they need to feel less "closed in" or to be able to lean on the edges of the box when needed.
3. Some cats do not like smelling each others waste-- so you may want to try two separate litter boxes.
4. The suggestion was made about laying tin foil down in that spot-- that could work, but it could be unsightly if your TV set is on a stand that you can see behind. Cats do not like sticky-- so you may want to use packing tape, sticky side up instead of foil. The tape is clear (so you do not notice it as easily) and could solve the problem.
5. Move the TV set into a position in which there is no space for the cats behind it. If that is not possible, throw old pillows, blankets, or other things behind it to fill in the gaps, and block (with pillows, etc.) the entrance/exit to behind the television set.
What worked for us, is we took the lid off of the litter box, and went to a more fine, clumping litter-- once we did that, our cat quit using the bath tub and bathroom sink and began to use the litter box.

Theres a few things you can do.
If you catch them, this may sound mean but it works, spray them with a water bottle. You can also spray something, I think its apple bitter, behind the TV so they dont want to go back there.
Or a pet spray that you can ask for at usually any pet shop.

Lay a piece of cardboard back there with double faced tape all over it. They hate the feel of the tape sticking to their feet, and will start avoiding the area. They may just find another place to go though, but maybe not.

The duct tape idea is good. Otherwise block it with a cardboard box.
