Ive noticed that alot of jobs these days, particulary in the construction industry, prefer/need experienced people. when i finished my HSC i got a job in retail (working in a deli)and i have been there for 2 and a half years, but, this is where hindsight and procrastination kill me, i would like to work in the construction industry, in particular as a plant operator (excavators, graders and the like). what would be the best way for me to gain experience in this industry? any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, especially from people who are/have worked in this industry.

Research the companies you are interested in working for or who do the kind of work you are interested in, then contact them and ask them what type of experience they want and how you can get it. Seriously, it really is that simple. Start with the smaller companies, you are more likely to reach someone who will talk to you. You say you work in a deli. Do any of your regular customers work in the field you want to go into? Start talking to them, ask them who you would need to contact.

Get over the procrastination thing fast! The longer you drag your feet, the longer you'll be stuck in a job you don't like.

Good Luck!
