It depends on a variety of factors here in the US. The most crtical factor in processing time depends on whether the person from a different country is marrying a US citizen or a legal permanent resident. Immigrant visas issued to people marrying green card holders or US cittzens fall into 2 different groups. Petitions filed for people marrying green card holders take 5 years from the time they are filed before they can be used.

Otherwise, it's a matter of processing times. USCIS is heavily backlogged in most everything it does. It currently takes 6 months or so to simply process and approve the petition. It takes longer to look at petitions filed by green card holders because those petitions aren't valid for use right away in any case. Then the petition goes to the National Visa Center for additional processing, which takes several more months, before it goes out to the embassy overseas. So, for a petition filed by a US citizen, it can take 8 to 12 months before an interview takes place and the visa itself is issued.

Be able to prove the marriage is valid, reside for a long period of time in the same domicile and have a credible work record in order to qualifiy for a greencard.

It can depend on the country and various other world events.

The US is trying to crack down on people getting around the law by paying someone to marry them so they can come to the US.
