According to countless studies done across America most Americans can't read above a sixth grade level but hey lets push it and go to 8th grade. Most religious text aren't at an 8th grade level just because a lot of them are highly detailed and very philosophical. How is it that there are so many religious people in America if the majority of Americans can't read the text they are adhering their life to? The same could even be said of Atheist as well if science is the justification of your belief but if you can't read indepth scientific study because those are written way above an 8th grade level how do you get your belief or lack there of from it?

If you have attended college, you are able to read at or above a 12th grade reading level, by definition.

The most difficult and complex things I have read were books by Oliver Sacks (vocabulary) and the introduction to Dionysius the Areopagite's 'The Divine Names' (concepts). Of the two, the book introduction was far more difficult to understand, even though the language was simple.

Lack of literacy is a type of censorship imposed by the elite to keep the masses from learning the truth. Examples include the religous right trying to prevent people from reading "The Da Vinci code", and Harry Potter books. I have a family member who is upset that I let my children read the Harry Potter series. She has never read any, refuses to have them in the house and refuses to listen to anything about them. Her opinion is based solely on what she has been told by televangelists.

My atheism has nothing to do with reading science texts. It's a result of years of applying critical thinking to religious beliefs. Ultimately, it came down to the fact that there is no evidence for the existence of any god.

Except and consider this: prior to the 19th century the majority of the population could not read, for centuries. Yet good religion flourished. You don't need to be well read to live and understand simple truths about life.

Atheism is much more popular amongst the educated.

The uneducated do not need to understand what the bible means. They have a priest/pastor to do that for them.
