My professor's father was sick and has now passed away. She has been going to California to see him and now to make the funeral arrangements. She's missed many weeks of class because of this. However, she has been absolutely wonderful, and e-mails our class with all sorts of assignments, and has really kept track of what's going on here. I am really appreciative (as we are just a gen-ed class), and also really sorry for her loss. I'd like to give her a sympathy card, but it is close to finals as well and I don't want it to look like I'm trying to kiss up to get a good grade. I usually don't give cards or gifts to professors for this reason.

What do you think? In this case would a sympathy card or a thank you note be appropriate, or should I just say my thoughts to her in person?

I'm sorry to hear about your professor's dad, Christine.

You know- I don't think you're the only one that feels this way about your professor. And expressing sympathy certainly isn't 'kissing up', whatever someone else might say.

What you might do is get a nice card and get your classmates to sign it with you. That way no one will have any hard feelings, and your professor will know that her class is thinking of her.

I hope she feels better.

When I started teaching, I realized just how much the professor knows about what's going on in the class. As a student I thought that my teachers and professors wouldn't know if I was writing a note, doing work for another class, and so forth. As a university instructor, I now know that I am aware of all these things, but I just don't necessarily react to them. Your professor probably knows what kind of a student you are and whether you are the type of student who will try to suck up for a grade. I think a card is just fine.

I think a sympathy card is exactly what you should give her, do not , however, use the sympathy card as a dual purpose card by thanking her for all the help. You can thank her in person for the help she has e-mailed while she was gone and let her know how helpful it was, and I don't think it is kissing up to her at all......

i might deliver a card, or e mail yet do it a pair of week after assessments. At that factor you are able to thoroughly assume your examination has been graded, so I wouldnt see it fairly is attempting to kiss up. in certainty in each type I even have ever taken approximately 2 week submit semester I even have despatched a letter of through instructor/professor through fact i pass to a small community college, those human beings supply their time and potential to us pupils and would desire to be making plenty greater money someplace else. no one has ever informed me its beside the point and its continually been met good reaction. never have i felt in affected my grade by using any potential.

Go ahead and send her the card. Why not? I doubt she'll think you're sucking up and she'll probably be suprised and comforted to know that you thought of her. Just write something like...

"Please know that you are thought of right now."

Consider having other members of the class sign it as well.

Send the card and simply say you are very sorry for her loss. I doubt she will think you are kissing up but would just appreciate the thoughtfulness of you expressing your condolences.

I definietly think it is a good idea. I would try to get all of my classmates to sign it as well. I can not imagine that she would think that you are sucking up
