Given that it is happening in Sudan, which is a predominately Muslim country, I am not surprised. The poor woman will be lucky if she only gets away with 40 lashes.
Needless to say, Muslims have zero tolerance for anyone they perceive insults their prophet. You may recall Theo Van Gogh was murdered a few years ago, because of a film called "Submission" and Salman Rushdie had a death fatwa issues for basically the same reason.
The sad thing is that the rest of the world, and especially the PC (Political Correctness) crowd in the United States, realizes that Islam is not a warm fuzzy and that they are antithetical to everything we believe here in the U.S.

While I agree that the punishment is extreme, I'm disturbed that many of you assume all Islamic countries are this way. They are not. I have traveled and lived in several Islamic countries, and their level of tolerance for perceived insults varies just as it does in non-Islamic countries. Yes, there are many backward, dogmatic Muslims -- there are also many enlightened Muslims who are sickened at what is happening to this teacher. There are also many backward, dogmatic Christians -- Being from the southern USA and being an atheist, I have had much worse threatened against me than this teacher in Sudan, for the "insult" of not saying the pledge of Allegiance and not praying along with everyone else.

I think it's an example of the dangers of combining politics and religion. Nothing good comes from it. Nothing!
"The last time we mixed religion with politics, people we burned at the stake"
"There's a reason they were called the 'Dark Ages'!"
