Evolutionary conditioning. Red is the color of blood, so it brings out strong emotions like anger. Black is the color of darkness when humans were most vulnerable, so it is associated with the "darker" emotions of fear and foreboding. Blue is the color of the clear sky and calm sea, so it soothes. Yellow is the brightest of the flower colors, so it brings cheer, as one would feel with the coming of spring after a harsh winter. White is the color of snow, crisp and clean. Do we really need to go on?

Our emotions are the link that bind our experiences in such a way that we have a unified sense of self. Thus, our emotions adjust with any experience.
