Take the pup for long walks on the street. The asphalt/concrete works like a finger nail file and wears the nails down. Specially if you have a dog that thinks it's a sled dog and is going to pull you all around the neighborhood.
edit
If the nails are small enough, you can use toe nail clippers or wire cutters. I'd go to Petco and buy the right tool for the job if your going to do it yourself. Make sure you get the stuff to stop the bleeding if you go to deep. I did that once, I've never cut her nails since. They bleed like crazy if you go to far.

It is practically impossible to cut a dogs toenails without the proper clippers, due their shape (and as they get older, they get REALLY thick). In a really young puppy, you might be able to cut the tips using human toenail clippers, but you won't be able to do that for long. Nail clippers for dogs can cost as little as $3 to $5 bucks (depending on size of the dog). If you cut their nails yourself, be careful not to cut the quick. Have a septic stick handy to stop the bleeding in case you do this by accident.

As a groomer, I trim literally HUNDREDS of doggie toes a day. Some dogs get EVIL when they see me pull out the big orange clippers. I use a good quality human nail file. Beauty supply stores usually have them in a holder by the register for under 2 dollars. Just file quickly, dogs don't have much patience.

It depends on the size of the dog. For my 3 lb chi pup, I use my fingernail clippers. For my 7 lb chi I use my husbands toenail clippers, and for my husband's 12lb doxie I have to use doggie nail clippers.
What ever you do, clip them sideways not top to bottom, it's less pressure, and the nail is less likely to splinter. Drives me nuts to see people trim them top to bottom like you would a persons, that'd be like trimming your own nails sideways.

Either take him to the vet, buy the special nail clippers, or don't do it! If you mess up you can really hurt the dogs, they have nerves in there....

It depends on the kind of dog. If it's a very small dog, you can use human nail clippers, but as with any nail trimming, you must be VERY careful!

You can but you must be very very careful you could cause him to bleed to death and no one wants that its probably better in the long run to just take him to a groomer or something like a pet smart.

No - I wouldn't try. Too much risk of doing it wrong and cutting the vein or at the very least upsetting the dog.
