Taking an evolutionary perspective on the psychology of this would point to human's innate tendency of "collectivism."

Always wanting what you cant have, then when you have it you are content and the craving is fulfilled. This is the reason that either the girl or guy in a relationship has to work to create sexual tension. For example, teasing or playing "the game."

Personally i dont like "the game" because i'm above that crap, but some people NEED it in order to remain interested.

So, the chase is more exciting because it's about getting something you dont have already. With this comes a feeling of triumph, success, and a boost in self esteem and confidence. Once you have that, what use is the relationship now if you werent really prepared to invest yourself in one?
