You need to be explicit in genealogy. For example, the above David Whitmer may have been an early Mormon. His brothers/ cousins won't necessarily have been. So, you can't link anyone to anything on the basis of a surname. It can be a clue, at best.

David Whitmer was one of the "Three Witnesses" in early Mormon history.
