The basis of all laws comes from The Constitution. Article 1, Section 8 grants Congress the power to lay taxes.
Contrary to what some uninformed folks claim, there's not a word about income taxes in The Constitution. They are and always have been legal under The Constitution. The courts back in the late 1800s ruled that income taxes were direct levies and had to be apportioned among the several states. (That was impossible back then but would have been a snap in today's modern computerized age.) That functionally declared income taxes dead (at the Federal level only) until passage of the 16th Amendment to The Constitution which overrode the courts treatment as direct levies subject to apportionment.
Beyond the Federal Income Tax (codified in Title 26 of the US Code) there are hundreds of other taxes at all levels of government implemented under thousands of laws. It would be impossible to enumerate all of them in this space; there are literally encyclopedias full of such information in law libraries.

Wow....it has been a while since we have had a Tax Protester Wannabe here.
Take my advice. File your returns and pay your taxes. You will be much happier down the road. In the long run, all tax protesters end up either broke, in jail or both.

Why do people keep on bringing this up? This is the second question about taxes being illegal I've seen today.
May be something should be posted at the beginning of the taxes section of Yahoo Answers. Something to the effect:
DON'T EVEN THINK OF ASKING A QUESTION ABOUT TAXES BEING ILLEGAL. LOOK UP AMENDMENT 16 OF THE US CONSTITUTION, PRINT OUT A COPY, POST IT NEXT TO YOUR COMPUTER, AND STOP TAKING YOUR TAX ADVICE FROM HALF DRUNK PEOPLE YOU MEET AT THE BAR.

the 16th amendment
"The Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes on incomes, from whatever source derived, without apportionment among the several States, and without regard to any census or enumeration."
there are numerous laws, both at the federal and state levels that cover specifics.
